Watching Varus’ progression from book one to now has been a delight. Add in the historical timeframe and you get an all encompassing series that keeps you wanting more. It would have benefited from a bit better editing (counsel vs consul, for example), which was slightly distracting, but overall it was a fun read and I will continue with the series about one of the best - and most underrated - generals in all of history. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tom Giblin -- Immortal is a massive world for the reader to explore : Belisarius’ war against Persia has all the drama and action of any famous TV show, but is woefully unknown to modern audiences. Havelock addresses this gap through a tale of mammoth-level battles, with a fair bit of drama connecting it all together. The battlefield of Dara was a delight to read, not just because it is such an important historical event, but because Havelock puts you in a position to see everything for yourself, at the ground level. Immortal is the type of book that can be devoured far faster than one realizes, because its pacing keeps your interest as Varus develops from an unconfident young officer into a full-fledged cadre of Belisarius’ leadership. It’s obvious that there is a ton left ahead for this series, and I’m looking forward to see how Havelock transforms the rest of Belisarius’ remarkable life into this tale.
